Backline Logistics Guide: Renting vs Touring with Gear

Every item you put in the van costs fuel and space. Every item you put in the rider might cost the promoter rental fees. Finding the balance is the art of logistics.

Drums: The Heavy Lifts

Traveling with a full drum kit is a nightmare for fly dates and small vans. The standard pro move is: Bring your Snare, Cymbals, and Kick Pedal. Request "Standard 4-Piece Kit (Yamaha/dw/Pearl)" in the rider. This ensures you have your signature sound (the snare/cymbals) without hauling 50kg of wood.

Amps: Head vs Combo

If you rely on a specific tube head sound, bring the head. It's portable. Request the Cabinet (4x12 Marshall or similar) in the rider. Cabinets are heavy and generally sound similar. If you use a Combo amp (like a Twin Reverb), it is often safer to rent it than to risk vibrating your vintage tubes to death in a trailer.

"Breakables"

In your rider, have a section called "Artist Brings". List: Guitars, Pedalboards, Cymbals, Snare. Then have "Venue Provides": Drum Shells, Hardware, Bass Amp, Guitar Cabinet. This clarity prevents the awkward "I thought you brought the drum stool" conversation.
