Stage Plot Guide: Symbols and Layouts

A stage plot is a visual map of your performance space. It is essential because input lists don't show geometry. The crew needs to know that the drummer is Center Stage, but the Bass Amp is Stage Left. A good plot prevents the "cable spaghetti" dance 5 minutes before soundcheck.

Orientation is Everything

ALWAYS orient your stage plot with the audience at the bottom. This means "Stage Right" is on the right side of the paper as you look at it (which corresponds to the musician's right hand when facing the audience). Label "Stage Left" and "Stage Right" clearly to avoid mirrored setup disasters.

Power and Monitoring

Don't just draw instruments. Draw AC Power drops (a lightning bolt or plug symbol) where you need them. Draw Monitor Wedges (trapezoids) or IEM packs. If you need a riser for the drums, draw a rectangle and label the dimensions (e.g., "Drum Riser 2m x 2m").

Keep It Clean

Avoid clutter. Use a legend if you have unique symbols. Don't try to draw realistic guitars; simple icons or text boxes are widely preferred. Export as a high-contrast PDF or JPEG/PNG. Never send a Word document with floating images that might shift.
