Tour Manager vs Production Manager: Job Descriptions
On small tours, one person does everything. On big tours, lines are drawn. knowing the difference saves you from asking the wrong person for a towel.
Tour Manager (TM)
The TM handles the PEOPLE. Hotels, flights, per diems, guest lists, and press schedules. If you are hungry, cold, or need a doctor, talk to the TM.
Production Manager (PM)
The PM handles the SHOW. Sound, lights, video, stage labor, trucking, and power. If the PA system is broken or the stage is too small, talk to the PM.
The Grey Areas
Usually, the TM advances hospitality (food) and logistics. The PM advances the Technical Rider. Communications must be synced so the bus arrives at the same time the stage hands are ready to load in.
